Dimitrios Serpanos holds a PhD in Computer Science from Princeton University since 1990. He received his Engineering Degree in Computer Engineering & Informatics from the University of Patras in 1985 (1st CE graduate in Greece) and his MA in Computer Science from Princeton University in 1988. His research interests include cybersecurity, embedded and cyber-physical systems, industrial systems, computer systems architecture and design, and parallel and distributed computing systems.

Between 1990 and 1996 he was a Research Staff Member (RSM) at IBM Research, T.J. Watson Research Center working in the area of systems architecture for high bandwidth systems. Between 1996 and 2000 he was faculty member at the University of Crete (Computer Science) and a researcher at ICS-FORTH. Since 2000 he has been a professor at the University of Patras, Dept. of Electrical & Computer Engineering. Between 2013-2016, while on leave of absence from the University of Patras, he was Principal Scientist at the Qatar Computing Research Institute.

He is President of the Computer Technology Institute and Press “DIOPHANTUS”, since March 2021. He has served two terms as Director of the Industrial Systems Institute (ISI), a research institute of Research Center Athena (R.C. Athena)(2016-2021 and 2008-2013). He had been collaborating with ISI as a researcher since 2000.

Serpanos is the Chair of the ARTEMIS Scientific Council since 2019. The ARTEMIS Scientific Council works on the strategic agenda of ARTEMIS-IA, the European industrial association on embedded systems.

He is also the Chair of the IEEE Computer Society Special Technical Committee (STC) on Smart and Circular Cities.

He has served as President (Chairman of the Governing Board) of the University of Western Greece (2010-2013), which is now part of the University of Patras.

Dimitrios Serpanos is the 1st recipient in Greece of an IBM Faculty Award (2005).

He is a Senior Member of IEEE, where he serves as member of the Board of Governors (2017-2020), holding the positions of Treasurer (2019) and Secretary (2020). He is also a member of ACM, AAAS and NYAS and an Educational Member of USENIX.
